The property boxes in Lotus Notes are often very densely packed, and occasionally, a valuable feature is disguised in plain sight in an attempt to conserve space.  This is certainly true on the border tab used for images, tables (table border, not cell border) and paragraphs.  I'll start with images, because they are very easy to see and use.<_/div><_div>

Because of his time travel he knows his wife throughout her life (almost) while she of course does not know that she wil

Notes performance is discussed in great length at other places, so this isn't what this post is about. I was wondering how one would
The multi-faced nature of the NSF
I'm running the XPages enablement workshop in Beijing this week. Having to teach other about new functionality guarantees either dispair or insight. Today I had a rather insightful moment. Very often the NSF gets blasted for being a "flat-file-non-relational-whatever" file. Tips for referencing elements in XPages JavaScript
I managed to hit a bit of a wall with my IdeaJam on XPages development this week. Up until now I haven't really needed to write any client side JavaScript which is impressive in itself compared to how much client side scripts we have in IdeaJam classic. But I have reached that point where I want to add some interactivity without round-tripping to the server. In classic Domino it's very easy to write script that refers to specific elements of the HTML because you get to control the IDs of thos

I know it's Monday, but I thought I'd share this with you anyway. So, most people know that you can control the content-type in an agent called by an Ajax request (or any type of agent for that matter) by using this line: print |content-type: text/plain| which will result in plain text being sento to the browser, of course you can also send HTML, XML, JSON or any other content type that you so choose. What you may not have known is that you can also control the charset property of th

SnTT, kinda: Interesting replication problem, and I wanted to get your ideas
This is a technical post of sorts, and even though I'm not "showing" a solution or trick, I am "showing" a problem I encountered with the intention to use the "grid computing" power of our collective knowledge and experiences. Also keep in mind that I want to keep this as generic as possible, so that I can get an "untainted" set of opinions. Here's the situation. My August article for Intranet Journal is out a little late, but it's called The Same Lotus App Inside, Outside the Firewall. Letting the xPages workshop sink in for a few days, I'm now preparing to spread the love. If you happen to be in Beijing in October 15-17 2008 you could join me for the first AP xPages workshop. It will be designed as a T3 (which stands for Train-The-Trainer), so you will not only learn what xPages is all about, but also how to spread the love. Teamstudio Profiler and Notes Agent Profiler, compared
Recently a friend of mine who read my GetNextDocument VS GetNthDocument post and mentioned to me that there is a profiler feature in Domino Designer, and he asked why anyone would need Teamstudio Profiler. I actually didn't know that Designer had a profiler feature built in, so I had to explore. It turnns out that the Profiler feature in Domino Designer allows you to profile agents and web services. How much bandwidth does Sametime need?
A question that pops up quite regularly is how much bandwidth does Sametime need. As a rule of thumb you can use this values: A one to one text chat need about 0.2kBit/sec, yes that would be 200 baud. What worked in the 300Baud modem days with your favorite BBS hasn't changed: chat is cheap. Presence transfer consumes about the same (Your Netbios broadcasts probably slanders 10 times the bandwidth. If you transfer files or images (pasted into the chat) bandwidth consumption will peak as: get wh
Where to install Lotus Notes - and what to do when upgrading?
When it comes to installing Lotus Notes there are a lot of conflicting ideas floating around. I'd like to shed a little light on them. Existing Notes shops typically have their Notes clients installed in C:\Notes and the data in C:\Notes\Data. This selection predates the Win95/NT/XP days. While that is working perfectly fine it makes Notes a little the odd child on the block, since all other software gets installed in C:\Program Files. When you install Notes on a clean machine it will suggest
Show 'n Tell Thursday: Easy access to Lotus Connections Profiles translation fil

Configuring which pieces of information are surfaced in the Profiles feature is pretty easy and well documented using the profiles-config.xml file. GetNthDocument vs GetNextDocument, revisited
NOTE: I had begun writing this last Thursday evening - and for some strange reason my Notes 8.5 client decided to NSD - and the autosave didn't save my document, even though it was enabled. Crud. So, I had begun writing it again and the NSD happened a few more times, and I discovered that the autosave feature in 8.5 beta may have a bug. I finally began saving very often on my own, and I am now finally posting this. The funny thing is that Bob Balaban - the guy who originally created this cause f

So, I've got another one coming for that Lib. Assist. 3 position out at NPB Lib. this coming Friday. (Aug. 22, 9 am) Anyway, here's the line up: I'm doing a farming theme. I bought a cow puppet yesterday to start my collection of appropriate accompanying animals for future story-times. First book: Stink Soup by Jill Esbaum (Very funny!) Second book: The Cow That Went Oink by Bernard Most (cute!) Third book: Farmer Duck by Martin Waddell (funny AND cute!) The first "song" will be "If I were a
SnTT - Server ID is Lost or Corrupted
Curtis posted to the developerWorks:Lotus forum that his server.id was "blank." Which led to some discussion on what to do to recreate the ID when you don't have a backup of it. Should this fate befall you, you will need to follow these ...
SnTT - Mail Does Not Route "Check in Progress" Message
A little early for a Show-n-Tell Thursday post, but I suppose that I couldn't wait. :-) We performed an upgrade from Domino Release 6.5.6 to 8.0.1 last week. Everything went very well. However, we noticed on Wednesday, that if a user sent a message ...
Wirelessly sync’ing iPhone with Notes 8 (works)
So your CxO is just dying for an iPhone but has to have his email, calendar, and contacts sync'd. There are a couple of ways to this, but I've worked with out for us using ESX Server. You may conside

SnTT - Forcing an OOO Summary
Prior to Release 8, the user received a summary report telling of the e-mail addresses that received an Out of Office (OOO) message. This message would appear in the user's mail box on the return date, as specified by the user. Now that Release 8 has ...
Check if an agent is currently running
I needed a way to see if an agent is running. To my knowledge, there’s no such thing possible with “normal” Notes-programming (is there such thing is normal programming in Notes?). Collegue Jo Van Eynde (all credits go to him) came with the idea of sending a console command and capturing the output the console [...] <_script type="text/javascript"> SHARETHIS.addEntry({ title: "Check if an agent is currently running", url: "http://www.bizzybee.be/feeder/?FeederAction=clicked&feed=Articles+%28RSS2%29&seed=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.bizzybee.be%2F2008%2F08%2F07%2Fcheck-if-an-agent-is-currently-running%2F&seed_title=Check+if+an+agent+is+currently+running" }); <_/script>

I needed a way to see if an agent is running. To my knowledge, there’s no such thing possible with “normal” Notes-programming (is there such thing is normal programming in Notes?). Collegue Jo Van Eynde (all credits go to him) came with the idea of sending a console command and capturing the output the console returns. Brilliant! If the agent manager isn’t doing anything, it’s just idle, otherwise it returns something like Running agent ‘x’. Once you know that, it gets really simple. (mor
Guess the Mystery Guest I am interviewing tonight!?
Can you guess who I am describing below? I'll give you 6 hints of who I'll be interviewing tonight, live on the internet on my Ustream TV show at 9 pm EDT, Thursday, August 7th for the Midwest Super Conference Free Interview Series. 1. MarketingSherpa, one of the world's leading research organizations, has put on the largest email marketing conference the past three years. This person is the only one in the info marketing or IM niche to attend any of them and was there for all three. 2.
SnTT - Notes.INI on a Mac
Running Lotus Notes on a Mac? Have you discovered that there is no notes.ini? Notes Clients on the Macintosh do not use a NOTES.INI file like they do on a Windows machine. Instead, they have a Notes Preferences file. If you are running OS X,  the ...
Blogging Habits and Live Well Wednesday
I saw this over at Stray Thoughts and decided to do it. I think it originated here.1. Do you keep a running list of blog ideas? No, something usually pops into my head.2. Do you blog on certain days and about certain topics?Well, I like having the MeMe's or whatever they're called like "Daybook" on Monday, "Live Well Wednesday" , "Thankful Thursday" and "Friday Show & Tell" but the rest is just random. I don't feel obligated to participate every week.3. Do you limit the number of MeMes you'll pa

SnTT - When Do You Need To Restart Your Domino Server?
You have made a change (or several) to your Server and Messaging Documents. What changes require a restart of the server? While this list is not all inclusive, it should address most of the major changes. Feel free to add to the list in the comments, or ...
SnTT: Customizing Login Forms on your Domino Intranet
This month's Intranet Journal article deals with customizing your Login Forms to your Domino Intranet using domcfg.nsf. I'm always surprised when I see logins at places that are still the default when it's so easy to at least swap out for your own logo. So hopefully I've helped beautify the world of Domino web apps a little bit.
Connecting Sametime to MSN
Disclaimer: The following considerations are hypothetical and are nothing IBM does recommend, support or implement. This are purely my little musings how something eventually could be done if someone would really want to. It also is a technical musing only and anybody acting on this musing better should study MSN's usage agreement and have a word with their lawyers. So let us begin.... The Sametime gateway that connects a Sametime server to AIM, Yahoo or Google does currently not connect to

Marija’s Last Apparitions with the Caritas Community Sunday, July 20, 2008, Marija Lunetti, on the last evening of her visit in the United States. The apparition was at 10:00 p.m. and lasted over four minutes. Marija asked Our Lady to bless all those in the Field as well as the Bedroom as she has always done during the apparitions in the Bedroom. Our Lady established this connection to the Bedroom and Field in 1988, in which during a visit by Marija, Our Lady appeared for three month
